You are watching: Key won't turn to acc position

Oh, wise forum members, please answer my question...... Ihave a 97 T&C and the key won"t allow me to turn the ignition to the accessory position. Why would that be?

Can you elaborate? Can you turn the key PAST the accessory position and start the vehicle, does the key just not lock into the ACC position? Or does it just not do anything when it sits in the ACC position? Or is it that you can"t turn the key any where past the ACC position so that you can"t even start the van? Details please.Depending on what the issue is, the ignition may just need to be lubricated with graphite or something similar.

Could it be that the ignition lock cylinder is worn (so actuator to ignition switch won"t push enough that car starts.) http://forum.tennis2007.org/showthread.php?t=9398

The ignition works fine. I have two keys and both go in and out OK, both turn clockwise to the on position and the start position. But neither key will turn counter clockwise to the accessory position. I had wondered if they were valet keys but that didn"t make sense.

I actually had this problem with my dads Caravan. Turns out that the lock cylinder has two spring loaded pins to make a detent for the ACC position. These pins are located between the cylinder and the protrusion of the rotating plug (the part that you can see from the outside.) As time goes by the pins start to seize and prevent the lock from turning counter-clockwise into the ACC position. What you need to do is remove the steering column covers and the lock cylinder halo light in order access and to lubricate the pins. Use a graphite based lubricant, not just WD40 or else dirt will stick to the oil and make the problem even worse. This might cure your problem.

Lots of people say not to use wd40 on locks, IMO I believe this not to be true. I have flushed out lots of locks with it and it doesn"t collect dirt because it dries and leaves the area clean. I have used it on locks all the time and it has done quite well. I use it on my door locks every year just before freeze up. WD40= Water Displacement 40th time.Question are your keys original to the vehicle? I had one original key that would work the acc and one that was a bad copy and only would after some wiggle work. Got a new on and it has been fine. Does it do it on both sides of the key? The key machines are not calibrated as often as should be and some times they are not careful enough to set the key down flat which can cause a deeper cut on the end of the key.

Thanks for the advice,I believe they"re the original keys and it doesn"t work inserted either way. I think I"ll try to lubricate the tumblers...

Chrysler1924... I think your confusing the ACC
position with the RUN position. ACC position is turning the key counter clockwise as far as it will go... past OFF. RUN is the position past OFF and before START.....ACC position is great to play the radio at tailgate parties and so on. It provides power to many of the accessories without powering up the ignition and fuel systems (among others). Thanks!
