The toughness of an acid or base is pertained to the extent of dissociation in solution:
- a strong mountain or base is fully dissociated
- a weak acid or base is partially dissociated
So as such we will have 4 possible types the acids and also bases:
1. Weak Acid
2. Solid Acid
3. Weak Base
4. Solid Base
Also, every of these acids and also bases will certainly dissociate in equipment to give different species.
You are watching: Is ch3coo- an acid or base

CH3COOH is a weak acid and also dissociates partially in systems (as shown with reversible arrow) to form H+ and CH3COO- ions.
Since this is a reversible process, CH3COO- have the right to accept H+ to form back CH3COOH.
Therefore the nature of CH3COO- is basic and we call CH3COO- the conjugate basic of CH3COOH.
2. Strong Acid Dissociation eg HCl

HCl is a solid acid and will dissociate completely (as indicated with full arrow) in equipment to type H+ and Cl-ions.
Since this is one irreversible process, Cl- has no tendency to accept H+ and type back HCl.
Therefore the nature the Cl- is neutral.
3. Weak basic dissociation eg NH3
NH3 is a weak base and dissociates partially in solution (as suggested with reversible arrow) to form OH- and also NH4+ ions.
Since this is a reversible process, NH4+ can donate H+ to type back NH3.
Therefore the nature of NH4+ is acidic and also we speak to NH4+ the conjugate mountain of NH3.
4. Solid base dissociation zb NaOHNaOH is a strong base and will dissociate fully (as shown with complete arrow) in equipment to form OH-and Na+ ions.
Since this is one irreversible process, Na+ has no propensity to donate H+ and type back NaOH.
Therefore the nature the Na+ is neutral.

So in summary:
- weak acid will dissociate to offer conjugate base
- weak base will certainly dissociate to give conjugate acid
- strong acid will dissociate to give a neutral ion
- strong base will certainly dissociate to give a neutral ion
These ideas are an essential and very important in Ionic Equilibria.
